Workout or exercise is the best thing you can do for your skin. However, the gym is also a breeding ground to bacteria and other microbes which can lead to a host of skin issues. So today we will take a look at some tips for workout skincare while at gym as well as before and after workout.
1. Remove all makeup
When you workout you sweat a lot and that is the main reason why your pre workout skincare should involve a clean face. If you wear makeup, it is just going to mix with the sweat and cause a host of skin problems like acne, fungal infections etc. So avoid wearing any makeup to the gym.
2. Always wear clean workout clothes
Never wear sweaty gym clothing even if it appears dry. This is because the sweat and bacteria will still be present on the clothing and it will enter your skin pores to cause acne, ringworm etc. So always wash your gym clothes each time you use them. Use hot water and mild detergent to do so and dry the clothes on highest dryer setting as much as the fabric allows.
3. Wear breathable clothes
Avoid tight fitting clothing that is restrictive as it can cause a host of issues such as skin infections, urine infection etc. Tight workout clothing can also abrade the skin and could lead to acne.
4. Moisturize before workout
Whether you workout indoors or outdoors, apply a thin layer of noncomedogenic moisturizer. If you run or jog outdoors, use a moisturizer with SPF greater than 30++ for broad spectrum protection. Use a product that will stay on the skin even if you sweat. An oil-free, gel sunscreen that is PH balanced is ideal. Pre workout moisturizing is even more necessary if you have psoriasis, eczema or dry skin as the lotion will protect your skin from the sweat.
5. Use antibacterial wipes
Gym equipment and yoga mats have tons of bacteria left behind by previous users. So make it a point to wipe down everything you use with antibacterial wipes. Make this an important part of skincare while gym workout.
6. Use a wet towel
When you workout, your skin pores open and the sweat oozes out. This is how toxins are thrown out of the system. So workout is the best time to replenish moisture to the skin. You can apply a wet towel on the face during workout from time to time to infuse lost moisture into the skin. This is one of the best gym skin care tips to use if you want healthy, supple skin.
7. Cleanse skin immediately after workout
This one is a no brainer. Of all the post workout skincare routine tips, this is the most important. Shower immediately after working out to wash away sweat, toxins and bacteria. You must also use a mild cleanser after workout to wash away oil and sebum from skin. A cleanser will eliminate bacteria and prevent acne breakouts. You can also take steam or sauna and/or opt for massage after workout to relax sore muscles and make the skin elastic and supple.
8. Use essential oils
Essential oils like tea tree oil are naturally antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Use diluted tea tree oil all over the face to prevent acne. You can use tea tree oil for preventing ringworm infection which occurs due to sweat and fungi present in gym lockers, public showers etc.
9. Wash that headband
Carry two headbands to the gym. Wear one during the workout; spray it with tea tree oil so as to prevent bacteria and sweat from causing dandruff, acne etc. Use the other headband after workout to keep sweaty hair away from face.
10. Stay hydrated
As our body loses a lot of water during workout, it is important to stay hydrated. Dry skin and other skin issues can get aggravated if your skin loses moisture which is not replenished.
11. Exercise in an air-conditioned environment
This is an important ‘skincare while gym’ tip. Always exercise in a cool environment or at least stand underneath the fan from time to time to prevent and dry the sweat. If you exercise outdoors, do so when it is not too hot or too cold. In summers, run or jog after sundown.
12. Take vitamins
If you workout, you need to also focus on vitamins and proteins to repair muscles and provide you with antioxidants you need. Take a good multi-vitamin supplement. Your skin needs B vitamins, zinc, vitamin C and E as well as Coq10 enzyme. Also take fish oil for essential fatty acids which provides elasticity to the skin. Vitamin C topical creams are also essential for mature skin to prevent discoloration, age spots, wrinkles etc.
13. Keep simple carbohydrate intake to a minimum
Sport bars, energy drinks, cookies, candy etc give you temporary satisfaction. So if you want great skin, avoid post workout binge. Opt for sprouts, organic fruits and vegetables, plain yogurt and lean protein. Eat plenty of nuts and seeds. As a part of your workout skincare, follow a healthy diet since your skin is what you eat. Keep simple carb intake less than 10% and focus on whole grains, complex carbs etc.
14. Best workout exercises for healthy skin
If you have acne prone skin, try swimming. Swimming does wonders for the skin as it can prevent acne and other issues thanks to chlorine. However, always shower afterwards to remove the chlorine as it can cause skin dryness. Also, always use waterproof sunscreen to prevent sun-damage to the skin. Other top exercises to give you good skin are: cardio exercise, yoga, pilates and aerobics. All of these improve blood circulation as well as the functioning of the kidneys and liver. These organs of detoxification work best when they are healthy, giving you a great skin in the process.
