Dry skin gives rise to a wrinkled, prematurely aged look. Sometimes,it can run in the family (ichtyosis), in which case, there is not much you can do other than applying moisturizing lotions from time to time. Dry skin can be further divided into two kinds: watery-dry or oily dry. In the water-dry skin type, the skin does not produce much oil and the pore sizes are also smaller. For oil-dry skin types, the pores secrete small amounts of oil and the skin may be oily around the nose, forehead etc. In most cases, dry skin is a result of the environment, improper diet, stress factors etc. Here are some natural remedies to banish dry skin on the face, hands and legs overnight:
1. Avoid sun exposure
Sun burn can lead to excessive dryness, irritation and itching. In severe cases, sun burn can also cause the skin to peel. As far as possible, stay out of the sun. Wear a sunscreen or carry an umbrella or a wide brimmed hat. Always use a moisturizing day cream or lotion containing SPF 20 +. Reapply the lotion every 2-3 hours.
2. Drink plenty of water
This is especially necessary when you have watery-dry skin type. People who drink less than 8 glasses of water daily are usually prone to extreme dry skin on hands, legs and face. Start by increasing water intake and see if it makes a difference in your skin condition.
3. Make lifestyle changes
If you are a smoker, it is time to quit. Smoking leads to a premature, wrinkled and aged appearance and also increases the skin’s dryness. Also reduce your alcohol and coffee intake as both, caffeine and alcohol, are known to increase dryness of the skin.
4. Follow a good diet
To improve your skin condition, you must nourish it from the inside as much as on the outside. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Also take an Omega-3 essential fatty acid supplement. This will provide the body with healthy oils. Consume plenty of fish, flax seeds, almonds and walnuts as they supplement the skin with the necessary oils. Avoid oily, spicy and salty foods which dehydrate the body. Take 2 tablespoons of flax seed oil daily to combat dry, itchy skin.
5. Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing
The key is to lock in the skin’s moisture. So apply a good quality moisturizer soon after bathing while the skin is still damp.
6. Use glycerin based soaps
You can also use a mixture of water and glycerin as your final rinse during bathing as glycerin moisturizes the skin and keeps it hydrated longer.
7. Cleanse your face with mild products
For dry skin on the face, apply a mild cleanser such as Cetaphil®-especially if you have acne. If your skin burns or itches, you can use a medicated ointment such as Desowen® or Efaderm®. In some cases, dry skin may be caused by allergies, so take an antihistamine medicine to see if the condition improves.
8. Avoid hot water baths
Hot water further aggravates dryness. So turn down the thermostat on your water heater or reduce your showering times.
9. Use colloidal oatmeal
Soak in tepid water bath to which you have added a cupful of colloidal oatmeal. This will moisturize the skin and soothe irritation, itchiness and other dry-skin symptoms.
10. Vitamin E and Aloe Vera gel
For cracked skin with deep fissures, you can use a combination of vitamin E oil mixed with Aloe Vera gel. This will help you get rid of pain caused by cracked skin with fissures.
11. Exfoliate with homemade Olive oil scrub
Dry skin needs regular scrubbing and exfoliation. To make a homemade scrub, mix olive oil, grapeseed oil and a little salt. Apply this over the face and scrub gently in circular motion. Wash off after a few minutes with warm water.
12. Honey lemon oatmeal face mask
Honey lemon and oatmeal face mask is just what the dermatologist ordered for extremely dry skin. Mix powdered oats, honey and a few drops of lemon juice and apply the mixture all over the face and neck. Leave it on overnight protecting your sheets with an old towel (or you can apply this mixture 2 hours before bath). Wash off to reveal healthier, younger and softer skin overnight!
13. Banana and oats
This is an excellent remedy to get rid of dry skin on face, arms or legs. Mash an overripe banana and mix it with powdered oats. The mixture will be thick, so add some warm milk to it. Apply the mask on the face, hands and legs. Wash off with cool water after 10 minutes.
Avocado is full of healthy oils-just what dry, itchy and irritated skin needs. Mash an avocado with fork and apply the pulp on the hands, legs and face. Rinse off with cold water.
15. Papaya and oatmeal masque
Mash an overripe papaya and mix it with oatmeal. Apply it over the face. Wash off after 30 minutes. This is a great mask for hydrating and exfoliating dry skin from face.
