Burning mouth syndrome (Fire in the Mouth) is a baffling medical condition that causes burning, dryness, tingling and agonizing sensation in the mouth. The symptoms of burning mouth mainly affect the tongue, cheeks, roof of the mouth, and in some cases, the teeth and lower lips. Burning mouth syndrome may also be accompanied by sleep disturbances, headaches, and extreme thirst or taste differences. In most cases, a dental procedure could be its cause, though, in many patients, neuralgia, anxiety disorders, thyroid problems, Candidiasis or post menopausal hormonal issues may also be contributing factors. Here are some home remedies to ease the pain.
1. Use honey
Apply some raw organic local honey to the affected areas. Do not eat or drink anything for an hour. You can also drink cold milk mixed with honey.
2. Essential oils for burning mouth
Clove oil is one of the best essential oils for burning mouth syndrome as it is anti-inflammatory and analgesic. It is regarded as the first line of treatment for all kinds of oral issues including dental pain, mouth ulcers etc. The oil helps numb the pain providing much needed relief. To use: take a few drops of clove oil on a sterile Q-tip and apply it to the tongue, cheeks etc. You can also add a few drops of oil to half a cup of water and use the mixture to gargle. Clove powder can also be added to warm water and taken 2-3 times a day to stop the pain. Other top essential oils for burning mouth are Lavender oil and tea tree oil. Use this to rinse the mouth.
3. Treat underlying deficiencies
Sometimes, anemia and other deficiencies could be a cause of Burning Mouth Syndrome. Taking iron capsules can help. You may also take vitamin B12, folate and biotin. These ensure normal growth of papillae and prevent burning mouth symptoms. Zinc capsules are also important if you suffer frequently and fish oil supplements can help with oral dryness.
4. ALA or ALPHA Lipoic Acid
Take Alpha Lipoic Acid 200 mg 3 times a day for 5 months and follow up with a maintenance dose. This can relieve pain caused by burning mouth, prevent nerve damage and also repair existing damage.
5. Homeopathic remedies
Many homeopathic remedies are effective in getting rid of burning mouth. Take following remedies 4 times a day for 5 days:
- Belladonna 30c if the entire mouth is dry, burning and tongue feels hot.
- Arsenicum 6c if the tongue appears red and inflamed.

6. Are you sensitive to Sorbitol and/or menthol?
Sorbitol is an ingredient found in chewing gum, toothpastes and mouth-fresheners. Sensitivity to sorbitol can also cause fire in the mouth syndrome. Examine your oral care products and discontinue use if that is the case. The same is true with menthol; switching to a menthol-free paste can help.
7. Ipsab gum treatment

l-Lysine mixed with a bit of apple juice and applied to ulcers, blisters and inflamed tongue can also be used for curing BMS symptoms. Supplements in the form of pills can also help.
11. Baking soda
Baking soda fights pain and inflammation and can give you much need relief. You can use baking soda for brushing your teeth instead of using harmful SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) filled toothpastes. Also rinse the oral cavity with baking soda rinses.
12. Cayenne pepper
Drink a glass of water mixed with cayenne pepper, lemon juice and apple cider vinegar to balance ph and make the saliva more alkaline.
13. Oil pulling
Pulling coconut or sesame oil every morning can relieve burning pain and dryness of tongue. This remedy also detoxifies the saliva and heals ulcers and blisters.
14. Blackstrap Molasses
Blackstrap molasses are rich in B vitamins and Iron. Thus it helps cure deficiencies that may lead to burning mouth syndrome. Take a tablespoon of BSM daily.
15. Burdock root
This relieves nerve pain and strengthens the nerves. It also cleanses the blood. You can take the capsules, tincture or burdock root tea to relieve dry mouth, redness of tongue and oral pain.
16. Dietary changes
Avoid all forms of dairy, sugar and refined grains. Switch to brown rice, oats and whole grains. Corn rye buckwheat and amaranth are good alternatives to go gluten free. Cook your food in coconut oil and eat lean meat and green vegetables.
