Burnt tongue can hurt for days and can even cause blistering, red or white spots and severe soreness. The condition often makes it difficult to eat and chew food normally. If you have accidentally burnt your tongue while drinking hot tea or coffee or eating hot melting cheese, then use the following home remedies for quick relief.
1. CoolWhip®
To get rid of the painful burnt tongue feeling, immediately squeeze some CoolWhip® on the burnt area. The dessert toppings contain palm or coconut oils which soothe the burn and prevent blistering.
2. Yogurt
In case you do not have CoolWhip®, you can use plain, unsweetened full fat or low fat yogurt. Eat a teaspoon of yogurt and leave it in the mouth for a few minutes before swallowing. Repeat if needed or if the pain persists. The cold yogurt will soothe the tongue and alleviate the painful burning on the roof of the mouth.
3. Salt water
Warm up some water and add a teaspoon of salt to it. Use the mixture to gargle several times a day. Doing so will decrease the intensity of the burnt tongue symptoms and also prevent blisters and white spots.
4. Sugar
This remedy works irrespective of whether you have heat burns or ice burn on tongue. Take a teaspoon of sugar or a sugar cube and place it in the burnt region. This will soothe the pain and soreness and give quick relief from burnt tongue feeling.
5. Pepto Bismol

9. Oil pulling

11. Healing tea
This is a grandma’s remedy to cure burnt tongue, white spots and blisters caused by hot liquids:
- 2 parts comfrey
- 1 part each red clover blossoms, nettles, skullcap and marshmallow root.
Steep the herbs in hot water for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture. Drink the warm liquid several times a day to speed up healing.
12. Homeopathic remedies
Many homeopathic remedies can soothe the tongue blisters and relieve pain naturally:
- Apis- Made from honey bees, this remedy is particularly beneficial for relieving blisters. Take Apis 6 C, 3 times a day.
- Arsenicum-This is for tongue burns worsened by cold drinks or ice. Take 6C potency for 2-3 times a day.
13. Take supplements
If the condition aggravates instead of improving, take a multivitamin pill. You especially need vitamin B complex, vitamin C and zinc. Also take extra lysine- an amino acid which promotes repair of tissue and healing. Evening primrose oil, goldenseal, Echinacea and green tea supplements can also help.
