Whiteheads on eyelids can be quite distressing and they often take a long time to go away on their own. Whether you have one or several white bumps on the eyelid, you want nothing more than to get rid of them quickly. However, their location often renders the removal difficult. Worry not! A pimple or bump on the eyelid does not always mean a trip to the cosmetician’s clinic. There are several home remedies that can help you eliminate a whitehead on upper eyelid or on the rim or even inside eyelid.
1. Warm salt water
The best way to get rid of a bump on the lash line or inside the eyelid is to rinse the eye out with warm saline solution. Fill up an eyecup with warm salt water. Place the cup on the eye so that the bump is completely immersed in the water. The salt eliminates bacteria while the heat reduces swelling and inflammation. You need to ‘soak’ the eye in this manner for at least 10 minutes to see results. Do this daily for a week to eliminate the bump.
2. Warm compress
If you do not have an eyecup, you can also make a warm compress for this purpose. Take a clean handkerchief and soak it in hot water mixed with some salt. Wring out the excess and place the compress on white bump on eyelid you have had since several months. Do this 3 times a day for at least one week. With regular use, the milia will dry and fall off.
3. Avoid rubbing or scratching the bump
Dirty fingernails can aggravate your eyelid bumps and can even spread the germs to healthy parts of the eyelid, causing even more pimples. So at any cost, avoid scratching or touching the bumps. Always wash your hands before you touch your eyes. This is necessary to prevent white bumps on eyelid rim.
4. Homeopathic remedies
There are several homeopathic remedies that can help eliminate a whitehead on eyelid rim. The main ones are Apis Melifica (for painful or burning bumps), Belladonna for reddish bumps, Hepar sulphuris for pimples on eyelid filled with pus, lycopdium for bumps on inner eyelid etc. Always consult a homeopath before taking these remedies since homeopathic science relies heavily on exact symptoms as well as complete medical history.
5. Boric or boracic acid
This is an effective remedy to get rid of white bump on eyelids you have had for months. Before bed, wash the eye with boric acid solution. Mix a few teaspoons of boric acid powder in warm distilled water and add it to the eyes on the inside and outside. Let it dry naturally. Leave the boric acid solution overnight. This will get rid of bumps, whiteheads and pimples overnight.
6. Treat it with tea bags
Research shows that 2% tea lotion can help eliminate bumps, and chances are that this remedy may work on whiteheads on the eyelids or on the rim of the eyes. Chamomile tea is best but you can also use black or green tea. Brew a tea bag in hot water for 10 minutes. Apply the warm bag on the eye. You can also apply cool tea bags; place the used tea bag in the refrigerator and press it gently to the eyelid having the inflamed pimple. Leave it on for 5-7 minutes. The cool bag will reduce swelling. For a bump you have had for weeks, use warm bag. The heat will dry the bump so it can fall off.
7. Leave it alone!
In many cases, the milia or white bumps on eyelids fall off after a few days and you need not do anything. It is especially important to avoid squeezing the pimples. A pimple, whitehead or bump results from inflammation so squeezing or touching will only aggravate the condition. Also, if there is pus inside the bump, it might squeeze out and infect other parts of the tissues around or inside the eyes. If there is yellow pus, then you can gently squeeze the bump as once that it out, the skin will heal quickly.
8. Use one remedy at a time
Many people mix up several remedies and then get frustrated when none seem to work. If your doctor gives you a prescription for whitehead on eyelid rim or upper eyelid, then make sure you use the medicine as directed before using anything else. Any prescription medicines for whiteheads and pimples might include retinol or benzoyl peroxide. Make sure these products do not get inside the eyes. If contact with the eye occurs, wash off with warm water.
An anti-inflammatory diet is also essential to prevent bumps on the eyelid. Eat fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Avoid unhealthy fats, excess sugar and processed food items. This is necessary to prevent eyelid bumps and styes. Take a multivitamin to keep the skin healthy.
