Why use commercial chemical based cleaners which contain nothing but petroleum byproducts and other toxic ingredients that can harm us and our pets? Today we will discuss natural cleaning products and multipurpose bathroom and kitchen cleaner recipes that work as well as their commercial counterparts without harming our planet. Some of these green cleaner recipes contain essential oils while others contain vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice and other natural ingredients that have a powerful cleaning and disinfecting action. Before we start with the homemade cleaning products recipes, we will enlist some of the best all natural, all-purpose cleaners:
Borax is Sodium Borate. This natural cleaner cleans, disinfects and deodorizes. It can also kill bacteria and molds. You can use it in place of bleach to remove stains and odors and also boost the cleaning power of soap.
Use baking soda in place of harsh chemicals to brighten and whiten clothes and teeth, to remove stains and odors and also to kill bacteria and viruses.
Like borax, you can use hydrogen peroxide to clean, disinfect, white and deodorize. It is one of the best homemade bathroom cleaners.
Lemon juice is ideal for cleaning greasy surfaces. It cleans, disinfects and deodorizes. Lemon juice has the power to kill bacteria and can also remove stains from clothing.
Vinegar is acetic acid. You can use it to soften hard water and, when used in laundry’s rinse cycle, can soften clothes. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Best Homemade Cleaning Product Recipes
1. Laundry soap
You may use this liquid laundry soap with cold water and in High Efficiency machines only. Also add essential oils for a wonderful fragrance. If you live in an area with hard water, add more soap.
- Baking soda-1/2 cup
- Washing soda- ½ cup
- 7 liters of water
- 1 cup soap granules
To prepare, heat up 1 liter of water and soap granules until the granules are completely melted. Remove from heat and add all other ingredients. Add essential oils if using. Soap will gel as it cools. To make the dry version of this laundry soap, use the same recipe without water. Just combine all the dry ingredients and add essential oils. To soften fabrics, add white vinegar in the rinse cycle.
2. Natural Laundry soap with Borax
- 7 quarts hot water (divided)
- 1 cup soap granules
- ½ cup each Borax and washing soda. If you have hard water, use 1 cup washing soda.
- 20 drops Lavender essential oil or any other essential oil like Orange, Lemon, etc (do not use fragrance oil; use the pure essential oils only)
In a pot, mix 1 quart water and soap granules until dissolved. In a clean bucket, take the remaining water and mix it with Borax and washing soda. Next, add the soap-granule mixture. Add the essential oil. This cleaner will thicken as it cools. Store in a bottle or jar.
3. All purpose cleaner for most surfaces (homemade cleaner with vinegar and Dawn®)
- ¼ cup vinegar
- Water- 16 oz
- 1 ½ tsp non bacterial liquid dish soap
- Lemon juice-optional
In a spray bottle, add the vinegar. Completely fill the bottle with water and add the liquid dish soap last. Use it for cleaning tubs, ovens, kitchen counters, backsplashes, bathroom tiles, floors, etc.
4. DIY home cleaning all purpose spray for kitchen and bathrooms with essential oil
- 1 gallon hot water
- ½ cup liquid castile soap
- 10 drops of Tea tree or Thyme essential oil
Mix all ingredients. Store it in a spray bottle. Use it all around the house for clean, fresh surfaces.
5. Homemade furniture cleaner
This is a wonderful furniture polish that will leave your cabinets smelling great.
- 2 tbsp each olive oil and white vinegar/lemon juice
- Warm water-2 cups
Mix all ingredients and store the blend in a spray bottle. To use, shake the bottle, spray as required and wipe down with a rag.
6. Mirror and glass cleaner
- ½ cup each white vinegar and water
Mix the ingredients and store the mixture in a spray bottle. Clean mirrors and glass with the solution and wipe down with a clean rag or newspaper.
7. Stainless steel appliance cleaner
- 1 tbsp each olive oil and vinegar
First use the olive oil and a rag to wipe down the appliance. Rub the surface well to remove smudges. Next, spray some vinegar on the appliance and wipe it down thoroughly with a clean rag for a shine.
8. Room deodorizer and disinfectant
- 2 cups water
- 15 drops each Tea tree and Thyme essential oils
- 10 drops of Oregano essential oil
Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray it on furniture but never directly on fabrics. Avoid spraying in eyes. Keep away from pets and children.
