Everyone is in love with the idea of fitness but not excited about the time and effort it takes to get really fit and strong. Many individuals and companies have taken and continue to take advantage of the fact that while 100 percent of Americans would love to stay fit and have a lean muscular body, only 20 to 30 percent of them are willing to put in the time. All the rest will burn a hole in their pockets buying equipment and clothing that promises to make them look like Greek Gods and Goddesses without ever moving a muscle or sweating an ounce.
1. The vibrating belt
Whether it is battery operated or needs to plug into a power source, there are several such vibrating belts available in the market and are always on some sale or the other over TV shopping channels and thousands of people dial in their orders only to take them out of the packaging and abandon them after a couple of weeks. The truth of the matter is that without actually burning the fat with running, walking or any other form of exercise and then shaping up the abs with crunches, lunges and the works, there is no way one can get 6 pack abs just sitting in the office chair or lying in the bed.
2. The spandex
There goes the other fad that promises to make you sweat so much and help you shed the visceral fat; giving you the slim and sexy look you dreamed of ever since you were a wee teenager. It doesn’t work. Why? Simple. You aren’t working out. No amount of leisurely gaits and strolls will make you sweat like a good workout. Wearing spandex underwear might hide some belly fat and fat in the buttocks but it will never make it go away.
3. The n-in-1 fitness equipment
This equipment promises to work different groups of muscles while you just sit there reading your favorite book. The truth is it is not a good idea to work so many muscle groups at one time. Besides, this equipment never really works the way they shown on TV and no real human being has lost weight and gained muscle using it.
4. Pills, powders, and shakes
This is the worst of all fitness trends that is evergreen, everlasting, never beneficial, and often harmful. Imagine a life of only drinking shakes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What use would you put the God given teeth, salivary glands, tongue and throat to? God never intended for man to live on fluids nor should he. However inorganic our farming practices have become, they are no worse than drinking up a glass of chemically processed shakes. A protein shake after a workout is one thing and a shake to substitute your meal is quite a contrary other. Same goes with pills that promise to boost your metabolism and help you shed weight. Most of these pills don’t work. The few wonder pills that cost a bomb most likely contain chemical substances that alter your physiology and weaken you from inside out.
5. Good old-fashioned running and strength training
Now, this is one of the best fitness trends that has always worked and will always work. There are several gym coaches and personal coaches making millions of dollars selling fitness to people and rightly so. A trained coach who helps you workout and gives you correct suggestions about your diet and enforces your protein intake and charges you good money for it is by far the best thing that can happen to you.
6. Weight and strength training
There is real workout involved in building muscle mass and eating protein rich food. It keeps you healthy and improves your metabolism. It also builds immunity and makes you look like a super model. It involves work and sweat and it is real.
7. Aerobics and water aerobics
Now, this is another result yielding fitness trend that keeps your heart healthy and attacks cholesterol every chance it gets. It also purifies the blood and keeps your lungs happy. Over time, it strengthens your muscles. Aerobic exercises like running and swimming are aerobics combined with strengthening exercises. So, it is a win-win.
Yoga is a multifaceted trend. It has various forms. The pranayama section of yoga is roughly the aerobic part and the various strengthening and immunity building poses form the strength training part. Deep breathing combined with meditation help with memory, concentration, fighting anxiety, stress and depression and it is a holistic approach to overall health of the individual.
Having said that, all the above mentioned worst and best fitness ideas and fads will continue to trend as long as there are people dreaming, working and some of them not working towards fitness.
