A lubricant or lube is very useful for overcoming vaginal dryness. Women in menopausal years often suffer from vaginal dryness which can lead to itchiness and irritation as well as pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse. Lubricants you buy from drugstores tend to have chemicals and many are also quite expensive. If you check the ingredients, you will find that most commercial lubes contain 95% water! So you are unnecessarily paying a high price for them. DIY natural lube at home is easy to make and also very effective. Plus you will get the satisfaction of avoiding chemicals in your intimate areas. Here are some simple personal lubricant remedies…
1. Neem oil
Neem oil personal lubricant not only prevents dryness; it also prevents unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The oil is antibacterial and also acts as a spermicidal. Mix some water, neem oil and a few drops of vanilla extract. Whisk well to combine. Apply to the walls of the vagina prior to intercourse. You can also apply this lubricant post intercourse to prevent implantation and unwanted pregnancy. Place a towel on the beds during intercourse as this oil can stain the sheets.
2. Simple coconut oil lube
Apply pure, virgin coconut oil to the vaginal area. Coconut oil is moisturizing and hydrating. It prevents dryness, itching and irritation. You can also mix it up with a few drops of tea tree, lavender, rosemary oils for enhanced anti-inflammatory properties. Coconut oil is also edible. Place a towel on the beds during intercourse as this oil can stain the sheets.
3. Olive oil
Before KY Jelly was invented, women used vegetable oils like Olive oil for hydrating their vaginal area. Apply olive oil on the labia and vulva. Olive oil is a great alternative to commercial lubricants. It also lasts longer than most over-the-counter lubes. As with coconut oil, it is best to use old towels or sheets to prevent stains.
4. DIY natural lube at home with cocoa butter
- 2 tbsp + 1 tsp sunflower oil or sweet almond oil
- Cocoa butter-1 tbsp
- 1 tsp each beeswax and vegetable glycerin
Method
In a saucepan or double broiler, combine cocoa butter, glycerin and beeswax and warm over low heat until melted. Remove from heat and allow it to cool and solidify a bit. Steadily beat the mixture with a spoon until the mixture starts to thicken and become creamy. This ensures that the water based glycerin is thoroughly incorporated. Pour in a tin and set at room temperature to synergize. This lube need not be refrigerated. However, you must use it in a year. Caution-this homemade lube recipe is not latex friendly.
5. Homemade lube with vegetable oil
- 2tbsp + 1 tsp vegetable oil of your choice
- 1 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil
- 2 tsp cocoa butter and beeswax each
- 1 tsp vegetable glycerin
- 500 IU vitamin E oil
Method
- In a saucepan or double broiler, mix all oils, butter, beeswax, and glycerin. Heat the mixture over low heat, until melted.
- Remove from heat, allow it to solidify. Beat with a spoon until creamy and thick.
- Now add the vitamin E oil. Beat again until well incorporated.
- Pour into small container.
- This lube does not need refrigeration. Apply as needed to vaginal tissue. You can also use this lube as a cuticle softener, lip balm or body butter.
6. Aloe vera and witch hazel
Blend equal parts of distilled witch hazel and aloe vera gel. Apply it liberally to vaginal walls before intercourse. This simple recipe washes off easily and also provides an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial protection. You can also use just Aloe vera gel.
7. Cornstarch lubricant
- 4 tsp cornstarch
- 1 cup water
Boil the water in a saucepan with the cornstarch and mix well to dissolve lumps. Reduce heat and keep stirring ensuring that the cornstarch does not stick to the bottom and sides of the pan. Keep stirring until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Take off the heat. You can add some vanilla extracts or honey to the recipe. Mix well. Store the lube at room temperature.
