How to make herbal tea
There are three different methods of creating herbal teas:
- Herbal Infusion
In this method, you pour hot water over the parts of plants like leaves, flowers, and stems. Allow the infusion to steep for 10 minutes by keeping the pot covered. This prevents loss of medicinal properties of the herbs.
In this method of making herbal tea recipes, you literally extract the medicinal properties of the herbs you use. So, you place all the herbs along with water in a covered pot and simmer the mixture anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the strength needed. In both herbal infusion method as well as decoction method, we suggest using a ratio of 1 tablespoon of dried or 2 tablespoons of fresh herbs per 1 cup of water. You can make a large batch of the decoction and dilute it with water, honey or milk and drink. However, it is best to discard left over decoction within 24 hours.
- Cold infusion
Cold brew herbal teas are quite popular as many people believe that cold brewing preserves the properties of the herbs making them even healthier. You must use pure herbs for this method as you certainly do not want your tea contaminated with microbes. Cold brewing steps are as follows: Add 2 heaped teaspoons of the herbs to 32 oz fresh cold water in a pitcher. Steep the mixture for at least 2 hours in the refrigerator or for 30 minutes at room temperature. Strain the herbs and enjoy!
You can also easily make your own tea bags by adding crushed herbs to muslin cloth and tying the ends with a string.
