Testosterone is primarily a male hormone but even the female body produces it in small amounts. This hormone is linked with love, sex drive, energy and libido. In men with low testosterone, there may be problems like erectile dysfunction, fatigue, poor muscle function etc. Let us take a look at some herbal supplements to increase testosterone.
Folk medicine has always recommended this herb as a natural testosterone booster. However, there are no scientific studies to prove this for a fact. This traditional Chinese herb is effective in treating diabetes and used primarily for overall health and wellbeing.
Dosage: There is no standardized dosage. Take the medicine as recommended by an herbalist.
2. Tribulus Terrestris
This is one of the most promoted natural supplements to increase testosterone in males. It is even known to increase muscle mass and studies have shown increased luteinizing hormone that increases testosterone.
Dosage: Take 500 mg per day in divided doses or as per label instructions.
3. Stinging nettle
This herb keeps testosterone in active form in men and women.
Dosage: Take 500-1000 mg three times a day.
4. Siberian Ginseng
Ginseng not only stimulates production of testosterone in men and women; it also balances dopamine levels and enhances feel good hormones.
Dosage: Eleutherococcus senticosus tincture is available readily in the market. Take as per product label instructions.
5. Pine pollen
Some reports show that pine pollen can increase testosterone levels in women. Do not confuse this Ayurvedic medicine to increase testosterone level with bee pollen.
Dosage: Take 3000 to 4000 mg daily.
6. Chinese yam
Studies have shown that Chinese yam, along with other natural testosterone booster herbs increased levels in animals. However, we still need more human studies to ensure the same.
Fenugreek (trigonella foenum-graecum extract) is a herb used extensively in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking. Some reports show that it enhanced certain aspects of libido and quality of life in men. Additional details are needed to extend current findings.
Dosage: Take up to 2000 mg per day.
8. Horny Goatweed/Barrenwort/Epimedium
Recent animals studies show increased testosterone levels in rats treated with epimedium herb extract for a period of 8 weeks.
Dosage: Many body builders take a dosage between 250-1000 mg per day.
9. Velvet bean or mucuna pruriens
This herbal testosterone booster is native to Asia and Africa and is used for its medicinal properties for treating snakebites and Parkinson’s disease. In studies conducted on albino male rats, at the end of 30 day period, the herb was found to elevate testosterone levels considerably. More studies are needed to evaluate these findings.
Dosage: The average dose of Mucuna pruriens is approximately 500 mg per day but if you are just starting out, take a smaller dose such as 100 mg per day.
10. Gingko Biloba
This herb has been proven to be an anti-depressant and studies have shown that it increases circulation. Some more studies are needed to ensure that it works as a natural testosterone booster as well.
Dosage– You can safely take up to 240 mg/day.
11. Longjack root/Eurycoma longifolia
A compound called eurycomanone in Longjack root was found to increase testosterone in rats. Detailed studies are still needed to ascertain if the same is true in case of humans.
Dosage: Men and women both may take up to 100 mg per day for 8 weeks.
Note that testosterone tablets for men also need to be taken with certain vitamins to increase testosterone. Do talk to your doctor before taking any of the above herbal testosterone supplements.
