Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects nearly 1% of the world’s population. It is characterized by hallucinations, bouts of depression, mood swings, split personality, hearing voices in the head, seeing things that aren’t there and other disturbing symptoms. Suspiciousness, not taking care of self, not socializing and so on are some other symptoms of this disease. Only 85% of affected people recover from Schizophrenia. Being a major mental illness, Schizophrenia is best treated with psychotherapy. However, there are some herbal remedies that can come in handy. While these may not cure Schizophrenia permanently, they can help one manage their symptoms. Always speak to your doctor before taking any herbs since many remedies are known to interact with conventional medicines.
Since many conventional drugs for Schizophrenia cause serious side effects like loss of libido, vivid dreams, hallucinations, appetite and weight changes as well as sleep problems, it is best to use gentle herbal remedies for psychosis and Schizophrenia. Licorice is one of the best herbs for this purpose. You can sip herbal tea made by steeping licorice powder in hot water for 10 minutes. Drink this prior to meal times, preferably before breakfast.
It is no secret that Ginseng is one of the best herbal supplements for Schizophrenia as it works on the brain and regulates blood flow to this area. Make a hot tea with Ginseng powder and hot water and drink it in the afternoon. You can also take ginseng supplements. 3. Homeopathic remedies for Schizophrenia

Boil a few strands of saffron with milk and take this at bedtime. Saffron reduces stress and enables one to sleep better. When stress is reduced, symptoms of psychosis also reduce.
5. Almond milk
Many patients with schizophrenia symptoms have benefitted from this remedy. Use almond milk in place of dairy. (Grind approximately 15 almonds in a glass of water to make almond milk at home). Almonds are rich in vitamin E and proteins which benefit schizophrenia patients.
6. Ayurvedic remedies for Schizophrenia
The Indian Ayurvedic herb Himalayan spikenard or Jatamansi can lower stress and prevent hallucinations. Take one teaspoon 3 times a day. Also take Shankhapushi (Convolvus Pluricaulis) with the guidance of a herbalist. This herb is especially beneficial for sleep apnea, memory problems, nervousness, anxiety etc.
7. Green cardamom
This fragrant herb can reduce symptoms of nervousness. Take powdered cardamom in milk or eat the seeds frequently.
8. Food for schizophrenia
Eat plenty of fresh water fish which contains omega 3 essential fatty acids that help the brain, cognitive function etc. Also eat walnuts, flax seeds and olive oil. These foods are good for the brain and help with cognitive function and memory. Carrots are rich in Beta carotene and niacin which might help mental symptoms caused by psychosis. Drink carrot juice a couple of times weekly. As far as possible, follow a gluten free diet.
9. Vitamin therapy
Many times, mental disorders stem from nutritional deficiencies. So get a blood test to rule them out. If needed, take vitamin supplements. B3 vitamin is particularly important to prevent schizophrenia and so is Vitamin D. 3 grams of Niacin and niacinamide with zinc can help patients.
10. Make your body more alkaline
Acidic food is often related to psychosis and mental issues. To make body more alkaline, drink apple cider vinegar mixed with water, thrice a day. Also take ¼ tsp of baking soda and ¼ tsp potassium citrate (99 mg tablet) in a glass of water 3 times a day. Avoid acidic foods like red meat, refined grains etc as far as possible.
Schizophrenia is often caused due to stress and nutritional deficiencies. Practice stress control techniques like Yoga and Meditation daily. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and try positive affirmations and visualization techniques to stay happier.
