In small quantities, ear wax is good for us. It keeps the ear canal clean and inhibits the formation of fungal and bacterial growth. However, when excess ear wax accumulates in the ear and hardens over time, it causes pain, infections and even a rattling sound. Moreover, hardened wax can also impact one’s hearing ability. Here are some easy ways to remove ear wax safely at home.
1. Olive oil
To remove ear wax with olive oil, warm it up first. Tilt the head and add it inside the ear canal. Follow this with 2 drops of hydrogen peroxide (3%). Maintain tilted position. After 5 minutes, repeat with the other ear. Flush both ears with warm water. This method will also remove impacted ear wax.
2. Lavender and witch hazel
One of the best natural ways to remove ear wax blockage fast is with essential oils. Lavender essential oil works best. Take 2-3 drops of Lavender oil and mix it with 1 tsp of witch hazel. Using a dropper, add 2-3 drops of the mixture in the affected ear. Keep the ear tilted for a few minutes. Repeat the procedure daily. You can also use the above remedy to remove hardened wax in your dog’s ear canal.
3. Baby oil/Mineral oil
Many oils work gently to remove hardened wax at home safely. Baby and mineral oil are two of the best remedies for ear wax blockage removal. Mix a few teaspoons of the both these oils with a bit of glycerin. Add the warm mixture inside each ear twice a day. Repeat for as long as needed to remove hardened wax painlessly.
4. Baking soda and Oregano oil ear wax removal remedy
Mix a pinch of baking soda with oregano oil. Take no more than 1 drop of this mixture and use it to clean the outer ear. Let the oil and soda get absorbed by the ear. In a day or two, the itchiness and crustiness will be gone.
5. Coconut oil
Warm coconut oil is another great remedy to remove hardened and impacted ear wax. Simply heat up the oil in a double broiler and add a few drops to the ear. Let the head be tilted as you do this. After a while, the oil will trickle out bringing the debris and wax with it.
6. Candle for removing ear wax
Google ‘ear candling’ and chances are you get hundreds of videos and instructional blogs on it. Many people use candle to remove ear wax buildup. What they do is insert a candle in the ear canal (with the patient lying on one side). They then light the candle wick. As the wick burns down, the hardened or impacted wax comes out naturally. However, doctors believe that this method does not actually bring out wax; rather the stuff that comes out is nothing but candle smoke and debris. So avoid using this method which promises to get rid of ear wax quickly.
7. Remove ear wax with hydrogen peroxide
This is the most popular remedy to remove ear wax quickly. Use 3% hydrogen peroxide. Set aside at least 20-25 minutes for this method. Lay on one side. Use a dropper to pour the peroxide down the ear. Keep some cotton balls or tissues handy. In less than a minute, you will hear some vigorous bubbling in the ear. Add more peroxide after the first batch has bubbled over. Use the cotton wool or tissues to wipe off the peroxide and dirt that comes out. Treat the other ear in a similar manner.
Caution: do not use 35% peroxide for this method. Also avoid this method if you have a ruptured or perforated ear drum or surgically placed ear tubes.
This is a dangerous method to get rid of ear wax so use it with extreme caution. Gently insert the sterile q-tip in the ear but bring it out immediately. Sometimes, this method could actually push the wax deeper within the ear canal.
9. OTC wax removers
Many over-the-counter wax remove drops work gently and effectively to remove impacted wax. Most of these contain ingredients like mineral oil, or peroxide. One of the better products is Debrox drops.
10. Wax remover kits
Ear wax remover kits contain a washing solution and a syringe system. They also contain pipettes and ear plugs. Some kits are specifically made for kids and some come with fancy bells and whistles like lights etc. You can also buy ear wax removal syringes. Ear wax removal vacuum systems work to irrigate the ear canal and pull out impacted wax.
You can always use commercially available ear wax removal products but the other homemade ear wax removal remedies described above will also help remove ear blockage quickly and safely.
