Perhaps we have got the title of this article all wrong; it should read ‘easy ways to add life to your years’. Come to think of it, they are not that different-for when you add life to your years, you can easily increase your life span or longevity. So, today we will discuss some things which decrease life expectancy so you can avoid those and do the things that add years to your life.
1. Find a focus
This is the easiest way to stop aging and live a longer and happier life. Some people run behind money, others behind success or fame. However, these things only tend to increase stress and are exactly the things that decrease life expectancy. The key to finding a focus lies in helping others. Wake up each day and ask: “What can I do to make this world better?”Volunteer to teach kids, travel to countries where they need your services or simply start a shelter or soup kitchen. There are so many things that are wrong with the world today; pick a cause and work for it.
2. Simplify life
Materialistic possessions add to stress unnecessarily. As we grow older, our focus should ideally be on distributing things we have acquired amongst our kids and leading a peaceful, hassle free life. While we are not suggesting that you start leading the life of an ascetic; we are certainly suggesting that you focus on minimizing clutter, reducing things that stress you out and instead focus on living a minimalist life. The lesser your attachments to worldly belongings, the happier you will be. This will automatically reduce stress and enhance longevity.
3. Arm yourself against aging
There are several factors in our control, apart from our genes, which age us. Too much sun, smoking, alcohol abuse, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyles, excess worrying, stress, guilt, anger and negative attitude are some of them. Guard yourself against these things because they all tend to decrease life expectancy. Eat healthy, exercise moderately and enjoy the guilty pleasures which life offers in moderation. 5 portions of fruits and vegetables can indeed increase your life span as they lower your risk of diabetes, heart diseases and obesity. Whether you cook at home or eat out, there are healthier food choices you can make. Blueberries, nuts and seeds, fish, olive oil, green tea, whole grains, cereals etc are some of the healthiest food choices you can make to add years to your life.And do get moving too. People who spend all their time on the couch are more likely to die younger than those who don’t. These are also some doable easy ways to increase life span of humans.
4. Brain-use it or lose it!
Dementia and senility are two debilitating aspects of aging. 5. Sleep more
Almost every individual has sleeping problems at some point or other. Your sleep quality can greatly impact your health and longevity. If you are not sleeping well, it can impact the quality of work you do as well as your relationships. All this adds to the stress and decreases life span.
6. Get annual physicals
Do not ignore the warning signs your body is giving you. Get that lump checked out and be up to date with your physical exams.
7. Let your best self emerge
Too much of stress is very bad but a little stress can actually be good. If you live a mundane life, it can get boring to the point that you feel depressed. So a bit of stress may just be what the doctor ordered. Do not get us wrong: we are not asking you to sign up for stressful activity like mountaineering or bungee jumping etc. However, learning something new and challenging your own limits is just what you need in order to increase your life span. The key is to let the best of you emerge.
8. Love yourself unconditionally
Only when you love and respect yourself unconditionally will others love and respect you. Learn to look in the mirror and love what you see: wrinkles and all. If you continuously berate yourself for being too short/fat/tall/thin, you believe those things until you actually become those very things you are afraid of. A person who loves and respects him/herself is in a better position to live life to the fullest and the Universe showers that love on her/him.
9. Forgive and forget
Bearing grudges and keeping feelings bottled up eats you on the inside. Lighten up! Forgive those who have wronged you. Move on! Stay in the present moment and do not try to find out the intention behind the other person’s mistake. Start by calling up someone you have not talked to in years.
10. Life is your greatest gift-be grateful always
Whether or not you believe in reincarnation, you are blessed to have this life and you are indeed so much more fortunate than many. So lighten up and loosen up and be grateful no matter what your circumstances are. Start each day with the following affirmations:
