Self image can be greatly hampered by hair loss and baldness. More and more men and women these days are complaining of premature gray hair, dandruff and excess hair loss leading to unsightly patchy, bald areas on the scalp. We all dream of beautiful, long tresses and hate seeing hairs in combs, on our pillows or dresses. So, is there anything we can do to make our hair longer, thicker and stronger? Today, we shall discuss simple DIY herbal hair tonics and hair mask recipes for faster hair growth. You won’t have to go far for procuring the ingredients for these hair mask recipes- most are available in the kitchen. Here goes:
1. Banana protein hair mask
This is a conditioning hair masque for dry, weak hair. It adds shine to dry, dull hair, strengthens the hair roots and also adds thickness and volume.
- 2 egg yolks
- 1-2 ripe bananas
- 2 tbsp honey (local, raw and organic works best)
- ½ cup conditioner of your choice
- 2 tbsp oil (coconut or olive)
Put all ingredients in a blender and puree until there are no lumps in the banana. Any lumps will be extremely difficult to rinse out. Apply the thick paste to the hair and leave on for 30 minutes. Wash off with a mild shampoo and deep condition again afterwards. The protein in this mask makes the hair stronger and thicker. It is suitable for fine, thin hair but for those with very thin hair, it is recommended skipping the conditioner but using a detangler.
2. Egg oil mask
This is a very simple recipe with 2 ingredients. This mask strengthens the hair and is wonderful for strengthening weak hair roots.
- 2 egg yolks
- 1-2 tbsp Olive oil
Mix the oil and egg yolks well. Apply the paste on the hair. Leave it on for 20 minutes. Wash off with cool water and mild shampoo.
3. Essential oil and egg mask for thick hair
- 1 whisked egg
- 2-3 drops of Lavender essential oil
- 4 tbsp Grapeseed oil
Mix all ingredients. Apply to the hair and scalp and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water and herbal shampoo.
4. Onion juice
Grate a large onion and apply its juice to hair and scalp. Leave on for 15 minutes and then wash off with shampoo and condition as usual. This remedy is great for dandruff and hair loss or alopecia. Use this herbal hair recipe for strengthening hair roots and preventing baldness. Garlic, a close cousin of onion can also be used for preventing hair shedding. This is smelly so you can choose to mix it with some fragrant essential oils and apply it as a pre-shampoo treatment. Alternatively, you can also mix garlic with shampoo and conditioner and use it on the hair and scalp.
5. Potato-egg-honey DIY hair mask
Grate a couple of potatoes and collect the juice. Mix it with an egg yolk and add a few teaspoons of organic honey to it. Rub this mixture into hair and scalp. Wash your hair off with a mild shampoo after 30 minutes. This recipe, when used 2-3 times a week, can stimulate hair growth and prevent scalp buildup caused by styling products.
6. Coconut oil-curry leaves and Amla hair tonic
For making this hair mask, you need to visit your Indian store in the neighborhood.
- ½ cup organic extra virgin coconut oil
- 10-15 curry leaves (available in Indian grocery stores)
- 1-2 Amla- (Indian gooseberry) this is also available at Indian grocery shops. You can also use amla hair oil or use amla powder which is available online.
If you are using fresh Amla, grate or chop it up in pieces. Heat the coconut oil and add curry leaves to it. Let the curry leaves become crispy before turning off heat. Add the grated gooseberry. Leave this mixture overnight so the hair strengthening properties of Amla and curry leaves infuse in the oil. If you are using amla powder or amla hair oil, then just let the curry leaves sit in the coconut oil overnight. Strain the oil and then add the amla powder/oil. You can now use this infused oil to massage into hair and scalp. It prevents premature graying of hair as well as hair fall. Use this treatment regularly to see results.
7. Aloe Vera and lemon yogurt hair conditioner mask
This is a wonderful remedy for dandruff. Lemon is antibacterial while aloe vera is anti-inflammatory and curb hair fall. Yogurt is anti fungal and stops dandruff flakes.
- ¼ cup plain yogurt
- Juice of ½ lemon or lime
- 2 tsp aloe vera gel
Blend all ingredients until you have a smooth paste. Avoid lumps in it which will be difficult to remove. Massage the paste into the hair and scalp and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse using a mild shampoo. Repeat weekly to curb hair fall and strengthen hair.
8. Coffee and tea rinses
Both tea and coffee have hair strengthening effects. Brew some tea or coffee and spray it in balding areas of the hair. Allow it to remain for 15 minutes before rinsing clean.
9. Essential oils to stop hair fall
Mix following oils with your favorite carrier oil and massage onto hair and scalp.
- 3 drops Rosemary oil
- 4 drops each of Geranium oil and Cypress oil
- 5 drops Lavender oil
- 2 drops each Cinnamon and Juniper oils
Mix all the oils and store the blend in a dark bottle. To use, dilute the blend with Jojoba/olive/coconut oil and massage on hair and scalp. Use the treatment at night and wash off in the morning. Repeat 2 times a week.
